My Oeditorship of Turboapa is at an end, after five years and some months. I was in an ebullient mood as soon as I left Kinko's Friday with the business pages copied, so much so that the worry of waiting to include the last wandering piece of Express Mail in the collation was (for a change) not even a concern. Then I started in writing a commentzine on the last six months -- haven't actually written a turbozine in that long, while the editorial operation took over all energy and attention available to it. After mailing everything Monday I had lunch yesterday with [livejournal.com profile] replyhazy who says a big commentzine is a normal response to finally playing the Get Out Of Editorship Free card.

But as I read further into the recent fracas (December) over the change of editors, it becomes a bit harrowing. Despite the kind wishes and thanks of many, I am feeling today as though no one will really like me now, since I have left off being useful to them. This is not a feeling founded in reality. At least I hope not. Besides, I still seem to be agenting for a half a dozen people who will need copies made locally of their emailed zines. Yet one would like to be appreciated for more personal qualities. At this point, notice of my sheer perseverance as a galley slave feels like personal praise.

I should point out here that it is quite usual for me to get phone calls from friends asking me to do something for them. In fact it is so usual that when I am personally low on power I don't answer the phone at all in fear that it will surely be another request for service from someone I can't refuse. Whether these are really friends, or people who understand Mr S and I often like to help people out, soft touches, might not bear a great deal of examination (and that's not an either/or choice). We sometimes refuse, but generally operate on the theory that What Goes Around Comes Around, and accommodate what we can. There are a small number of people (maybe you are one of them!) who ask so little and give so much that one welcomes with joy any opportunity to be of assistance.

When I started Oediting Turbo it was with that joy. Other chances will come up now. Opportunity is always knocking.
