Woke at 5 a.m. from disturbing dream. I was on road trip somewhere in Ohio or Pennsylvania and had stopped for a break in some dark gravelly parking lot, very tranquil, checking maps to work out route to the northwest. There were a couple of lakes in the back country that I wanted to work into my way back. Then the car wouldn't start, and I very nearly abandoned it, wandered off, had conversation through fence with some fellow who lived in flats nearby. Then came back to close roof of car, tried starting it again and realized it was only out of gas. Wandered off again with gas can in the urban wilds under some freeway, in a territory where gas was costing an apocalyptic $5-something a gallon, realized the gas can was already less than half full and I was not sure where I had left car.
