All the action adventure fighting of thrilling battles with massive armies is mere distraction.
(And a powerful distraction. Even to Sauron -- he can't take his Eye off of it, all the cool moves. "Other evils there are that may come, for Sauron is himself but a servant or emissary." Just watch the evening news, see what the camera's eye follows.)
What's really important is that the Ring of Power should be destroyed. It's a complicated thought, that Ring of Power. Everyone who sees it thinks, surely we can harness this force for Good. In the end it's done by one guy. Trying to let go, instead of holding on. With a little help from his friends. And one little guy, struggling with self.
