A week ago I was preparing in most desultory fashion for the art fair at Hilldale. The bookkeeping is done and checks are written and very nearly in the mail. Today I can report that it seems to have worked, that is, my own sales were no worse than usual despite the contraction of inventory, and I got a couple of small commissions. But most important, I actually had some fun out of it, instead of spending the excitement of the event on cutting mats, which is about my least favorite activity (even though I am pretty easily amused).
A couple days ago instead of finishing the books I was in my ceramics class. Marcia seems to have finally got me to think some thoughts in ceramic, after oh only a couple of years of training. Every time she turns around someone (often me) is asking some very simple question. I was thinking about ale glasses, and then drinking horns, which got onto thinking about conical forms. So she loaned me this book on handbuilding tableware, that I am actually reading through and not just looking at the pretty pictures. It seems to reinforce a lot of the stuff she has been trying to explain to me. There is a lot of detailed procedure involved (maybe this is true in any art) and you only need to know it when it comes up but then nothing else will do and if you don't know it the first several efforts make a dog's breakfast of your project. So this afternoon I have to go in to the studio a second time this week to take care of a couple of things I forgot to do on Tuesday, that I don't think will wait a whole week.
Also I am wondering whether there is any point in writing a business plan for a business that is not supposed to grow bigger and take over the known universe. Mere world domination would do for me. I am a good little worker but I need a better supervisor.
