As I may have mentioned, before school started Number One Son cleaned out his room quite thoroughly and disposed of all his childhood junk. Three boxes of this unsorted stuff then magically appeared in my subterranean chamber.

Like Psyche and various other princesses in the tales I have spent some time today, antlike, sorting through a large pile of this granular debris into its useful parts and discarding lint and dust and junk. Instead of lentils and grains, though, I have mostly bits of plastic. For instance, a bag of K'Nex, and a pail of Legos, with one base for a castle defense, and mostly not bricks but more specialized pieces, particularly heads and helmets and torches and tools right down to the tiny spears that fit the tiny hands of the tiny spearcarriers. We have much larger boxes of Legos in the attic.

Some of this stuff is going to Goodwill, which was my excuse for sorting it, although I have discarded a great many of the odd war toys, broken helicopters and scary watchtowers and your odd aircraft carrier. A surprising cache of illicit weapons turned up though, considering I never allowed large six-shooter pearl-handled cap guns, or even the larger water pistols. There's a bag of three different kinds of toy soldiers, some olive drab and some desert brown, and another bag of black and silver knights all swinging some kind of weapons at one another. Five astronauts, and a couple of odd cowboys, which I don't think were ever actually played with, likewise the Loch Ness monster. Various larger barbarians, batmen and spidermen and other musclebound scary guys.

I found a lot of markers and pencils, which of course are art supplies, and some rechargeable batteries (now recharging). A bicycle light and swimming goggles. A couple wind-ups that I like, and sets of Noah and Mrs Noah and their animals, and odd horsies. I like these tiny guys, and some of these are rather nice animals, I might keep them, you never know what I might think of to do with them. A small set of dominoes, and what looks like a hard drive, which I suppose I should ask about before discarding. And this large detailed Balrog is very cool, particularly since I found his tail and attached it again.

You can't play chess with only thirty pieces, can you?
